I believe that most people don't have the same opinion of rednecks that you reported on your site. Many believe that the low level soldiers in the KKK are rednecks. Take a look at the so-called republican base, which is mainly comprised of rednecks that hate the president because he is black, which makes no sense. Historically, it appears that those in power, to justify the unfair treatment of black Americans and to perpetuate the ideal of white superiority, manipulated rednecks. My grandfather, who was of fair skin, would kid about himself being a redneck farmer because of the reddish color of his neck from working outside most of the day. He always said he was one of the good rednecks -- not one of those that had a life style based on racism. It is a reality that rednecks have been associated with what has been wrong with this country, mainly denying certain Americans the rights to freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Racism has been inherent in the history of those called rednecks. Maybe it is time for the “R” and the “N” words to go away. Both of these terms are derogatory so why support them. It will be very hard to revise history in our lifetime because of the ingrained opinions that are perpetuated by those who hold on to the old ways. It will be very difficult to change the meanings and opinions about these words – so why support them. What is the importance of belonging to a group of “R’s” or “N’s”, doesn’t it seem that just being a righteous and free American would have a better connotation than trying to revise the definition of redneck? The comment about labeling is interesting. I think that a very essential part of being a redneck is that we have thick skin and labels, comments, nicknames and other non politically correct language and terms are not offensive to us. That having been said; the very fact that someone corrects us in our use of the term "Redneck" to describe who and what we are, DOES go through that tough skin, because we don't WANT to be told what we can and cannot say and we don't want to have to choose our words carefully. By the same token, we don't want to hurt others. We can be careful without being paranoid; and we enjoy and are proud of our redneck heritage and nature. The day that a non-redneck, politically correct person makes the determination that redneck is an unacceptable term, is the day that rednecks everywhere need to stand up and say enough is enough. I know we can prove that we're not about racism, not every redneck has a front row seat to the cross burning of the week. Now it has been molded into a homologous association with NAZI societies and Arian attitudes. Garofalo is like most other high society, highly accentuated actor/actress. the need for them to to say these things comes not form education on the subject matter but for the sheere need to bring attention to themselves. These tea parties are not about racism. They are about tazation without representation. The government does not have its own money they have our money. So how do they plan on paying for this billion dollar stimulus plan? By raising taxes that is how. So these people are fighting for their rights to not edure the mistakes of others and loose their hard earned money to fix those mistakes. I agree with Michelle that we should stop the lableing and start actually educating the world again. i have two half brothers who are mixed and I consider myself a big redneck. I believe proudly refering to yourself as a Redneck, simply means that you are no stranger to hard work, drive what you want, wear what you want with extreme pride in yourself and family. You do as you wish, not givin a #### what your neighbors think of you. But at the same time will do anything humanly possible to help that same neighbor out in his or her time of need. I have friends who are both African American and Hispanic that thaught I was crazy by calling them rednecks. Then I saked them 3 questions, do you believe in hard work and self pride not caring what other people think of you? Are you one of the first people on your street that helps out a neighbor that needs help? Do you believe that we live in the greatest country on earth. Then say it proudly I am a Redneck. Those people who choose to put others down by ignorantly calling people Rednecks, don't realize that is a name that we should be proud of. So the next time someone you get called a Redneck a pridefull thank you would be a good response. Be very proud of your Redneck Heritage and attitude. Be proud Redneck Nation Reply to this

Thanks to savetheredneck we're going to get stronger and smarter and more organized as time goes on. So on behalf of all the Yankee Rednecks in America, we salute ALL REDNECK brothers and sisters and may God Bless each and every one of us!!

I think the name redneck has really gotten out of hand and has been altered from what it was originally intened to mean. It is meant to define a group of citizens who spend their time working outdorrs in the field and have acquired Red Necks form the intense overexposure to the sun. I am proud of my country roots and the farm I was raised on with my Grandparents. But does that make me racist well my brothers don't think I am and that is good enough for me.

I agree with other respnses on this sight. Redneck is an attitude not a certain race or coming from a certain part of this great country we all live in U.S.A. Be proud Redneck Nation

One of the things we are trying to do at savetheredneck is to celebrate our heritage. We all agree that diversity is a healthy and wonderful phenomenom that occurs in nature. So, why should we not rightfully acknowledge it in a cultural environment. Celebrating our cultural diversity (heritage) is honoring our ability to adapt and change to whatever the circumstances. I think that we should keep the traits that maintain a healthy Redneck family and be willing to let go of the negative aspects. Being a Redneck is our way of relating to our world and its conditions. Would you want the birds and animals to all be the same?

I'm glad to have found this site! Excellent job, all y'all.
My husband and I are proud Rednecks living & working among folks who are not, but we do our best to spread the redneck "culture". We take liberal shooting (gasp)! When we entertain these folks (often parties of 50-80) at our home that we call "The Compound", we play songs from "The Redneck Collection" (our self-compiled playlist over over 50 CD's worth of redneck music). And we serve them food grilled to perfection over hardwood. They love it! We being out the Redneck in most all of them!!
Carry on!

rednecks come from all cultures-most are mixes of ancestry. many here in TN are descendants of American Indians who either crossed with or "became white in records to avoid removal" and farmed the land here.
We had our bull riding practice pen knicknamed The Cumberland Furnace Redneck Practice Pen by members of the community and we were proud to advertise in the Community Center's ad book that way. We are farmers and rachers who take care of the land.Even our bull riders like the title of Redneck Practice Pen. We didn't pay thousands for an arena but built it the old way out of sawmill lumber.Same for bleachers. We have port-a pots for the crowd so if all that makes this a Redneck Practice Pen so be it. We love it and our little Practice pen gets more spectators than most local rodeos and events. Got to love our Redneck culture.

Im a southern girl from Mississippi and i came across this site in hopes of finding out just what all the fuss was about Janeane Garofalo's comments about rednecks. Down here where Im from the term redneck is an insult to alot of people just like hick and hillbilly. Everyone usually puts them all into the same catagory. So for me to find this website and see people praising the term is odd, but I really have enjoyed reading all the literature you have on rednecks. I read an article in my local newspaper about this site and they all took it for a joke, but I advise anyone who doesnt want to be ignorrant about the term to visit this site. Thanks

I have always referred to myself as Southrn, born and bred. And I am proud to be here.Until I met my husband I really never gave the term redneck much thought. My huaband referes to himself as a redneck and a finer person I have never met. if being a redneck is hard working, honest, sincere and someone who cares for family above all else ,well then call me one to. We are proud independent people who like to raise our own food {meat and vegtables} look for what the earth has to offer and try to help when we can.Yes we like to enjoy a drink of beer or shine after a hard day and that day dosent end until all is set to rights. We are country ,what we dont eat from our garden I can,and we always share with our family who are not able to grow ,pick or slaughter on their own. We still heat with wood by choice,it always feels great on a cold winter day. Somehow the older ways seem more worthwhile and self satisfying. So if any of you rednecks see anyof us in you then call us redneck to.
